Market Update

General - Evolution - Berkeley - but not much to report!

Good afternoon

The US$ is very strong today..not really sure about the reason. That is putting pressure on gold, which briefly dived below 1300 ( now at 1302 ) and base metals, which opened the day stronger, but are generally weaker now.

Home prices in US-cities are strong, but Consumer Confidence cools a bit, I guess no wonder, given the hurricanes recently.

Markets are sometimes crazy...Novo Resources, Canadian-listed, but with all relevant activities in Australia´s Pilbara, are continuing to go through the roof...market cap close to 1 bill Can$, based on a gold find in the Pilbara. Very nuggety deposit, which is a bad word for gold miners - hence they call it "conglomerates". I would be very cautious...Anyone with assets not too far away started moving as well. I am not in, which is a pity - but I am not contemplating to get into it, either!

Berkeley Energia - became the first mining company to my knowledge, which sponsors a soccer team! Sounds very odd - but in highly political Spain, I think they are doing the right thing, and while I do not know, how much tehy are paying for it, I am sure, that we talk 100.000 Euro´s at worst. The two traditional teams of the village went bust, and BKY are now the saviour of football in that little town! I am sure, that this will raise the sympathy level with local people even further. As you know, the mine is now fully financed, and all systems are go - except for the uranium price. For now, I have almost given up on the uranium price, I have to admit. Great project, and probably the best in the Western World - but for now, I will only watch, what´s happening in the uranium market.

Evolution - sorry to push them again! But I just looked at their presentation at the Denver Gold Show, and thought, how impressive EVN´s achievements have been over the last five years. From a small, obscure start-up, they have become a true leader in Australia, and a very cheap producer with 9 years mine life today. Today, Jake is paying the price , though, for being conservative: By running a gold miner, which is designed to make money across the cycle, and by only doing vcalue-add aquisitions, he is a little bit short of growth in the moment. On the other side, a very reasonable dividend does make waiting easier!

General - Finders - Sheffield

Good afternoon

well established parties got an absolute hammering in German elections...the very right wing biggest winner, with just under 13%. Looks like a Angie/Greenies/Liberals coalition, which might not be easy, but could actually be quite reasonable...we will find out . The only good news is, that 60% of right-wing voters voted for them without being convinced, but because of disenchantment with established parties. Germany is doing well, but we have to look after the 15-20% who either are not doing well, or at least feel that way!

Heard a story in the Radio the other day about an American math-teacher, who got up at 5.45 am, comes out of school at 3.45pm, and then starts at 5 pm as a sales girl in a shop - only to check on her kids by 10 pm....There are very few in Germany, who have to take 2 jobs to survive - but we have a few, and that´s not good! In our social market economy, which has worked very well since World War II, there got to be enough wealth  for everybody getting his fair chance to share in it+ contribute, without having to work 80 hours/week!

German Business Confidence fell slightly in August - I guess the Euro did not help....

Trump is fighting now with black sport stars in the States...no smart PR! Let´s hope, that it hunts him!

VW apparently asking for tenders to supply them with enough cobalt on a take-or-pay basis for the 10years starting 2019! They must be dreaming...Not sure, when and if the car industry will understand, that they should put some cash into developing companies in the space, to secure future supply. Japanese and Chinese are much better at that. VW also is reported to indicate in the tender, that they will be moving from 6:2:2 ( nickel:cobalt:managese ) into 8:1:1 batteries, which would catapult nickel demand.

Kingsgate - there are some rumours around, that they would forfeit financial compensation, for receiving mining/exploration permits they have been waiting for for many years. This would make the Chatree Mine a great asset again - even though it remains to be seen, whether country -relationships with Thailand can be repaired! Kingsgate have 22 Mill A$ in cash - that would go a long way to restart the mine.

Sheffield - sorry, again today...but they have signed their second off-take agreement, this time with a large ceramics company in India, for about 24% of the planned production. They now have 36% under off-take agreements. These agreements will be very beneficially for the planned financing of SFX´s mine. More offtake-agreements, and financing updates are expected for " the near future". The stock is doing well, and is slowly but surely coming on the radar-screens with a market cap of just above 100 mill A$ now.

WS- interesting new contract with the existing MD, Bary Cahill. His Performance Rights have vesting conditions, which are strongly weighetd towards growth to 35-40.000t of copper p.a., and 40-50.000t resp. I think especially the latter will be impossible to be reached from the existing mine - even the first target will be very difficult indeed. So I take this as a strong endorsement of the board of a M&A strategy. I am not 100% sure, whether I like this, as it will be very hard to add projects of a similar quality. Personally, I would be happier with a huge dividend, unless they find something outside of Indonesia to reduce country risk.

I fear not much more of interest to report today!

Good afternnon

Purchasing Managers Indices in France and Germany very strong, especially for manufacturing...

China increases trading costs and margins for all commodities substantially, leading to a sell-off in metals / iron ore / steel today.

Strike Energy - finally fixed the previously agreed term sheet with Orica, which effectively lets Strike out of the previous off-take agreement. Quantity is much smaller, and we understand, prices much better than agreed upon a few years ago. That´s very good news for Strike - however, it had been expected following earlier announcements.

Sheffield - the mineral sand developer has succesfully cleared an appeal against their Native Title Agreement in a Western Australian court. Sounds like nothing, but the Native Title Agreement is an essential basis for the mining license, and this appeal would have had the potential of serious time delay for the developement. Mineral Sand prices have gone from strength to strength, helped by a strong building sector around the world. SFX have a very large resource, while some other Australian producers have a diminishing reserve base at existing mines. Blackrock is the cornerstone-shareholder here, owning just under 10% of SFX. For everybody interested in mineral sands - I know, that not many are! - this stock should be looked at carefully.

Finders - Strike - Peak - Panoramic - Genex

Good afternoon

Yellen has spoken...and has confirmed, that there is a realistic chance to "normalize" it´s behaviour gradually. That means most probably one more hike this year, and 3 hikes next year. Eypectation is still, that interest rates will not return to "normal" levels any time soon...

But the above has been more hawkish than we have seen before, and hence, the immediate reaction was to send the US$ up, and metals including gold down. Remains to be seen, how this pans out over the next few days. I think the US$ might not return to old form, and we might quickly see renewed strength of the Euro.

Gold has broken the support level of 1300 quite significantly - I fear we might now see a re-test of the 1245-1250 US$-level.

The A$ reacted quite strongly to the weakness in commodities, especially iron ore, and is under pressure today For many companies, this should be a positive.

Finders - came out with a very positive, half-yearly report yesterday. According to those numbers,a nd at todays copper price, the company can produce 80 mill A$ in cash every year...and I believe, that by the middle of next year, we might see the company start paying dividends in a substantial way. AISC of 1.36 US$ have been published for the first time. EBITDA of 57 Mill A$ for the half year is also very impressive! Euroz, the stockbroker, have a price target of 40ct for the company, and have been the major trader in the stock today. They believe, that every year additional to the current, 6 year remaining mine life, would add 5ct to their valuation.

Strike - that has been a very positive placement! I hate share holder pruchase plans, as they always lead to selling in the market from retail guys. This placement, without any entitlement to existing shareholders, raised 9 mill A$ at the price of 7ct. On the surface, disappointing for existing shareholders - but the net-result - that is a share price of 8.9ct today! - is the ebst thing for everybody. With a SPP, this thing would be trading at 7.5ct today! The placement has been very well received, and was heavily oversubscribed, with only 4 institutional investors taking up the bulk of the placement. I have had very positive feedback from the roadshow - investors have been impressed by the new MD and his technical top-man, both ex-Shell people, and the chairman.

We should imminently see an announcement of a fixed agreement with Orica re their off-take agreement, debt-refinancing etc. If not, something is wrong! And within the next 6 weeks, the South Australian Government will announce the grant ( = present ) for various projects, which can improve gas availability in that state. STX are hoping for a substantial grant - that would be the next major news, before JAWS 1 will be drilled in the first Quarter, and hopefully prove commerciality of the project. Still - STX are not without risks. The gas is there - and lots of it - but we all hope, that a pathway to producing it will be defined by Jaws, as expected. If that happens, the sky will be the limit!

Peak Energy - did not manage to speak to them today - but surprisingly, the CEO resigned....Reading the announcement, and noting, that his departure is not abrupt + Darren moving to the position of non-executive drector, I think this has been a very friendly transition. The current COO, an experienced operator, but not in a MD -role, will be the transitional CEO of Peak. All a bit unfortunate, still, given the state of the company - but I will report some background tomorrow.

Genex - lots of positive nise from the government, independant scientist, and the company about government-initiatives and the future of hydro-pump in Australia. The Australian Energy Minister mentioning their project again, and somewhere at a conference, Executive Director Simon Kidston has commented, that financing would make good progress. I expect this to happen sometime this calendar year, and it would be a massive breakthrough for this small company, developing a 250 MW pumped hydro project in Australia. There is no other project coming on in teh nearer future, to my knowledge. The stock has been quiet lately - but I remain very bullish on this stock.

Panoramic - Australia´s pre-eminent resources fund, Colonial, has increased it´s shareholding in PAN by 7 Mill shares to 5.5% now. Nice vote of confidence in one of my favourite stocks! Unfortunately, nickel is receiving a bit of a hammering today, being down nearly 4% currently to just under 11.000 US$/t. Nevertheless - I am not at all woried about nickel prices anymore,as battery-demand for EV´s will strengthen overall nickel demand substantially over the next few years. If nothing, else we need some patience!

Have a nice evening! Metals are still weaker, but it looks like they want to close at much improved levels from the lows

General - Strike

Good afternoon

US chief-diplomat Trump held a wonderful speach last night - his fans will be happy with him!

Base metals are having another positive day today - nickel is up by 2.5%, followed by zinc with 1.3% in the afternoon.

Iron ore and steel had a fair setback over the last 3 weeks or so - but certainly BHP and RIO would still be extremely happy with todays prices in the high sixties. For producers of inferior quality like FMG things are still good, but harder, given the record-discounts being offered for this type of iron ore. Given the enviromental clamp-down in China, this is not going to change soon, I fear.

But coking coal and thermal coal are still trading at great levels...way above long term price forecasts.

Not all that much to report on the micro-side today, except for one of my favourites,

Strike Energy - who are raising cash today. I understand, that there is a lot of interest - but details are still confidential at this point and will be announced tomorrow.

Have a nice evening
