Market Update

General - Evolution - Genex ( sorry, again ) - Venturex - Breaker - Independence - S32

Good afternoon

the Trump-presidency will not last for long!!

Strong Housing Starts in the States.

Duerte ( the next maniac ) has confirmed his support for Gina Lopez´action with regards to the mine closures. Long life Gina Lopez - well, at least if you are long Australian nickel stocks!

The gold price is still profiting from yesterdays inflation numbers, I think, while we are seeing some limited profit-taking in the base metals today Nickel is trading above 11.000 US$/t - for the first time since the Indonesian export ban was loosened up, while cobalt is stronger again in London.

Evolution came out with a good Half-Yearly result today, in line with expectations. Pretty much all record numbers...Net mine operating cashflow of 213 mill A$ swa them paying back 160 mill A$ of their debt, to end the year at 22% gearing. The strong cash generation is not really a surprise, given AISC of 738 US$/oz in the last Half. AISC will be lower again in the current Half, driven by a full contribution of Ernest Henry, and better copper prices.

The company is putting great emphasize on Cowal, the most important asset. Board approved a 230 mill A$, massive cutback to increase mine life by 8 years to 2032, and an additional 30-40 mill A$ for improvements to the process, to increase recoveries by 10-14.000oz p.a. . Reserves at Cowal have been increased by 679.000 oz, resources by more than 2 mill oz. This asset is shaping up better and better - it was a great aquisition. The mine has 3.2 Mill oz in Reserves now, and more is expected over time.

The company is highlighting exploration upside from the Tennant Creek JV, from Mungari ( mainly the old Phoenix-ground ), and Mt.Carlton. EVN underpinned it´s position as Australia´s No.2 behind Newcrest...and is continuing to increase it´s average asset quality. The stock is just about correctly priced - perhaps 10% upside at current gold prices, like most Australian gold producers, as the strength of the A$ has the A$ gold price only going sideways in the moment. At 2.30 A$ EVN have not priced in a premium for management at all - and tehy have proved over the last few years, that the company is capable of doing smart aquisitions, as well as managing operations in a very efficient manner. Jake has got every reason to be a very proud presenter in Zurich next week!!

Breaker - there is continued talk about BRB being on the way to a large orebody...by very smart people! I know that they have had a great run, and I have taken some profits myself - but the market cap of 78 Mill A$ is not demanding at all, and is not pricing a lot of blues sky in. The market cap of 78 Mill A$ would be small, if they continue with their recent exploration success. Again, we will hear a bullish story from Tom Sanders next week! He could be a big winner, and few people deserve it more than him!

Venture Ex - have announced some refinements to their previous feasibility study, which are very positive. The 1 Milltpa base case delivers 32.000t of zinc, and 12.000t of copper for 12 years, to arrive at an pre-tax NPV of 338 mill A$ and an IRR of 52%, for a peak-cash outlay of 183 Mill A$. The short payback of 1.6 years for capital expenditure, and the high IRR are big +es for this project. The feasibility study has been done at a zinc price of 2535 US$/t, 6.450 for copper, and 19$ for silver, which should be realistic and perhaps conservative. The project also has considerable exploration upside, as VXR have lived hand-in-mouth for the last few years. Overall, a good speculation on zinc prices, which some analysts have going to 3.600 US$/t over the next 12-24 month ( I personally think, that this is too bullish, given the possibility of Glencore bringing on suspended operations again later this year ).

Independence Group - announced some very good exploration results around their Jaguar copper/zinc/lead mine. Not enough really to move a 2.6 bill$ company, but certainly positive. The main stories for IGO remain Tropicana Gold, and especially their new nickel mine, which is ramping up.

Genex - official press release from the premier and the Minister of Enviroment as to the government support of GNX´s solar project - with multiple references to to their hydro-pump project. Turnbull specificially mentioned it in a speach in parliament today as well. You can just feel the big, political support for this project. Turnbull is under pressure from the polls, and the elctricity situation in Australia is very critical, and subject to press articles every day. GNX has multiple meetings lined up with several government bodies - this is a dream constellation, and I have absolutely no doubt, that this small company will recive massive support to finance this thing - and at a reduced time frame! One should not chase the share price, I guess, as the current righst issue will only be finished in 2 weeks time. The market cap is now 60 mill - the solar project is worth 40 mill approx....the pump-hydro will be 5x larger ( in terms of power produced ). I am genually excited to meet management again at our conference in Zurich!

S32 - BHP´s ugly duckling announced a good result today, but dividend disappointed. Given the massive free cash generation of 600 Mill US$ last half, and 860 Mill US$ cash in the bank with no debt, a 200 Mill US$ dividend is very paltry indeed. Even as they have potential aquisitions like RIO´s Samancor on their mined, this could be very easily financed with free cash generation at this level. There is some speculation as to S32 announcing a large share buy-back with 3rd Quarter results - still, I am an old-fashioned man, preferring a dividend in my pocket! They made very positive comments on nickel, and on the potential coal mine curbs in China.

have a nice evening!

General - US-CPI

Good afternoon

people here would hope for as active communication between our politicians, as the Trump-entourage seems to have had with the Russian intelligence service. I think it´s unbelievable, that his people have been in several communications with these guys. What the f..ck should they have to talk about???? Is there anything positive you can talk about with Russian spies???

CPI rises by the fastest since 2012 - up by 2.5% YoY and 0,6% in the Quarter! That´s massive...Yellen is definitely behind the curve! Hard to believe, that gold initially tanked to 1219 US$, before recovering to trade just above yesterdays close, as I am writing.

The Aussie gold sector unfortunately has been bit boring lately...no wonder...the A$ gold price is back to 1600 and has been there for just about 7 weeks now! That´s a healthy price for Australian producers - but without a real move, we will be treating water for some time longer. Unfortunately, I do not see this changing any time soon, as strong resources prices are putting upward pressure on the A$.

Yellen seems to be pretty sure to increase US-rates in March...most probably, this is very much overdue, given the positive economy and rising inflation. Retail sales pretty positive as well...The US$ keeps on strengthening - Yellen calling!

Chinese credit growth has been positively received, as well as  thoughts to potentially curbe coal mines again.

Both parties accepted to have a government-led mediation to try and solve the labor dispute at Escondida. But the way it sounds, the earliest possible meeting time will only be next Friday...that´s a long time to go for the world´s largest copper mine.

Base metal prices are well supported in London today , as well as iron ore.

Rare Earth stocks are starting to move....Lynas trading at the highest since late 2015, GGG since early 2014...Peak Resources moving on small turnover as well. Investors waking up to the fact, that at least currently, you don´t only need lithium, but also cobalt, copper and Rare Earth  for most elctrical cars or their batteries. Cobalt rose again on the LME to the highest price since 2010!

Have a nice evening!

This year, following companies will attend:

Evolution Mining / Perseus Mining / Panoramic Resources / Prairie Mining / Genex Power / Crusader Resources / Breaker Resources / Peak Resources / Finders Resources / Energia Minerals

Market Update

this market is almost a bit hot in the moment...probably needs a breather. Iron ore is trading at a mind-blowing 92,25 US$/t - and freight rates are down, giving another $ to producers. Investors are now looking even at more exotic things...like cobalt, which is trading spot at 19 US$ now! Massive move....I guess Peter Harold will be able to explain to us next week at the conference, what stronger copper- and cobalt prices  could mean to Panoramic´s  nickel project, which will produce meaningful amounts of copper and cobalt as by-product. Do you recall me writing about it, and using a bullish 20$ for cobalt just last week?  Well, we are already there...but my calculations were too bullish....still, strong cobalt prices will be very supportive. He did not want to give me  details, as smelter agreements are confidential.

The market is already talking about gold miners Newcrest, Oceana and Evolution, all of whom have significant amounts of copper as by-product, which will serve these guys greatly to reduce their costs of gold production. One could already see that with EVN´s Ernest Henry Mine  last Quarter, which produced gold at a negative AISC of 114 $/oz - this will be even lower this Quarter, as copper averaged 5284 US$ last Quarter, and so far 5815 US$ for this Quarter - today it´s at 6140 US$t. Theoretically at least, todays copper price will give them an additional 22 Mill A$ or so in revenue.

Later today, some profit-taking in the metals is showing up....no real reason...probably somebody is taking profits, and you can´t blame him!

In the meantime, Gina Lopez is active again - I have to admit, much to my delight...( oh my god, so opportunistic! )...she is cancelling further mining concessions...Philex, quite a large company, down by 13%...and Indonesia is talking about a 10% export tax for low-grade nickel ore....Supply disruptions in nickel will continue to be with us for quite some time! And in copper, I am sure you ahve read about Escondida, Grasberg ...the two world´s largest copper mine in trouble...

Interesting move by Glencore yesterday...they took out controversial investor Dan Gertler and increased their ( already ) controlling position in two copper/cobalt mines in the DRC. The larger of these two mines alone controls about 20% of the world´s cobal production. The Chinese, who took out Lundin and Freeport, and Glencore now control about 50% of the world´s cobalt production just via those mines. And cobalt is sky-rocketing...it doubled over the last few years, and as we all know, it´s desperatley needed for electrical car batteries. Having said this - there are substitutions for everything, and at one stage, this might hit cobalt. Tesla for example are using about 8kg per car - not too meaningful in terms of total costs of a car, but the security of supply, and where this stuff comes from, are also important considerations.

Another way to play - or better speculate - is via Ardea Resources,w hich is a spin-off from zinc developer Heron Resources. Ardea controls Australia´s largest cobalt resource, which has a high grade zone containing 50 millt of ore with 0,12% cobalt and 0,86% nickel. Very early days, but still interesting to watch. This is a lateritic orebody, which does not make things any easier. I do not know the stock well - but could be an idea for cobalt-fans!

Still money flowing into the gold ETF´s - despite a relatively strong US$.

One little warning for Aussie mining companies: The A$ is looking like it might be moving trough resistance at 77.50-78ct against the US...that might well lead to some kind of very strong move to 85-90ct....not good for our miners, but the way these commodities are marching, I fear it might be a question of time for this to happen.

West African Resources - they could not come to our conference this year due to time constraints - unfortunately. I still very much like the story. The market seems a bit concerned, that the bankable feasibility study is not out yet - but I believe this to happen within a week or two. I am not expecting any surprises - this will be one of the few, halfway sizeable , new projects on the drawing board. At current gold prices, this will be a very profitable project, thanks to excellent grades and easy metallurgy. Companies, which attended the INDABA last week in Capetown, have told me about substantioal interest from several private equity-type of new funds, all hungry for new projects, and some of them with 1 bill US$+ to spend. Hence I would not even be surprised, if this proejct could be financed without a general equity raising. We have seen the other day in Capricorn, that these PE-investors are not shy of actually paying a premium! I am not saying, that this is happening here - I just want to express, that it might not be all that hard to raise anotehr 50 Mill or so for a smallish company like WFA. Currently, they have 18 mill$ in cash ( as at 31.12. ), and 40 mill 15ct-options, owned by their banker Macquarie Bank, will mature shortly.

Genex Power - today announced the financial close of their Solar project stage 1 for 50 MW. 100 Mill A$ have been sigend up by the Clean Energy Finance Corp ( government ) and Soc Gen. The project remains on track for first production just befor Christmas. Stage 2 feasibility study should be finalised very shortly, potentially increasing the project size to 270 MW. As you know, the real price here is the pumped hydro project, using the old pits of the Kidston Gold Mine. As I reported, Turnbull is now almost daily about security of energy for Australia, and industry is very concerned about power outages. The Liberal government is under big pressure to deliver something...this is a very big story in Australia. GNX have the only advanced project of this type in Australia - more are needed, but 250 MW is quite a large project. I am absolutely amazed, that this stock is trading at 20.5ct...I realise, that the current rights issue has been disappointing, and is pressuring the share price somewhat - but 14:1 is small, and for me, this is a great opportunity to buy a stock, which has been valued at a multiple ( Cannacord has valued them at an unrisked 1.50 - adjusted for the current rights issue, and risked about 64ct ) and  has very significant (you could even call it: desperate ) political backing. I believe, that the chances for GNX are not only high to get a price guarantee for the power, but also direct subsidies as well as cheap funding from the government. An absolute dream constellation! I disclose my personal interest!

Have a nice evening!

general - S32 - Finders - Lucapa - Perseus/Beadell - Foran Mining

Australian Resources Investment Conference

This year, following companies will attend:

Evolution Mining / Perseus Mining / Panoramic Resources / Prairie Mining / Genex Power / Crusader Resources / Breaker Resources / Peak Resources / Finders Resources / Energia Minerals. Please note one change here: Graphex had to cancel, and Crusader will be presenting instead!

iron ore us yet up again...should trade at around 90 US$ in London today, after adding about 4% in Asian trading...just amazing. The numbers involved here for the major players are absolutely massive..RIO for example, are producing 330-340 millt p.a. of this stuff. Iron ore is now trading about 25$ higher than consensus numbers ...the current price would add an ADDITIONAL 8.000.000.000 ( 8 bill US$ ) to their cash flow!!!! Div-surprises for the major players BHP/RIO/Vale/Fortescue and Anglo will be the norm this year!

And the obviously strong steel market should also support other commodities like coal, manganese, nickel, and base metals in general. Base metals are up currently by another 0,5-1% in London, on top of mega-strong gains on Friday. Inflation, I can hear you coming, as oil is also up by roughly 25% from a year ago. Money continues to flow into the US- as well as the German gold ETF.

Zinc is trading at the highest level for just about 10 years today,a nd is targeting the 3000$/t -mark / copper is above the magical 6000 US$-mark, or just under 2,80 US$/lb / lead trading at 4 year highs / even nickel is trading at reasonable levels again.

Our little Foran Mining has a theoretical 673 Mill Can$ NPV7 at todays metal prices..and is trading at a market cap of 32 mill Can$...while Pierre Lassonde and other directors have taken up their options to cash up the company for the rest of this year, unless exploration drilling will be stepped up substantially. The next round of drilling is financed. I am not sure what will drive this stock - but if you are prepared to play the waiting game alongside one of the smartest mining investors in the Canadian market, this could turn out to be a smart investment. I have been waiting for longer than I originally planned - but I think it´s very worthwhile and hence own a reasonably large position.

You might want to look at S32 Ltd, which is not well known, yet has a market cap of 13 bill A$. S32 is the spin-off from BHP, housing all the "unwanted" BHP activities like coal, manganese, aluminium, zinc and nickel . S32 is making serious money, and according to Macquarie, is trading at a PE of just 6 for June 2018, and 5 for June 2019 financial yearsat current spot prices. The Div is substantial  and could be approaching 10%, as S32 has no debt, more than 1 bill A$ in cash, and should be generating about 1 bill A$ in free cash p.a., even at Macquarie´s offical estimates.

Finders - another one, which is undervalued...Company is now producing at name plate capacity, which should see them producing 28.000t of copper for the first full financial year of production , being June 2017/2018. AISC are estimated to be 1.60 US$/lb, what should be conservative. FND own 73.5% of the project, and the debt atributable to FND was 67 Mill US$ as at 31.12.2016 and is falling. net debt should be just under 87 Mill A$ as at today. The company should produce something like 50 Mill A$ in free cash for the year 2017/2018...and more later, once the hedge position of 16.000t at only 4800 US$/t has been worked through by March 2019 ( 25% of production ahd to be hedged because of the bank debt ). At 2.5 times free cash p.a. this stock is way to cheap....The last broker research I have been seeing valued the stock at 27ct - at coppe prices of between 2.75 US$lb at 2,95 for 2018/2019, which makes about sense. I am holding a large position in FND, so once in a while I have to sell a few, when the stock goes up - but I am only doing this to satisfy our internal risk management rules. Please note, that the above figures are before debt service - but within less than 2 years, they will have a net cash position.

Lucapa - discovered another very nice stone with 227ct, which should be valued at between 7-and 9 mill US$. Importantly, this diamond is from a new mine area, giving further credit to the quality of their alluvial production. As you know, the real price is in finding the kimberlitic source of these diamonds, but at current levels, the price can be justified from the alluvial production only. Unfortunately, the company has some 7 mill staff options expiring in April/May at 30ct, and 20 mill listed options ( 20ct ) in Oct of this year, which will hold the share price somewhat under pressure. Still, a good story to keep adding on any weakness, in my opinion.

Perseus and Beadell - Van Eck increased it´s holding in the two stocks by 12 mill shares each - so it does not look as if they would want to exit again, despite PRU`s slump in the market cap.

have a nice evening

Market Update

I am sick and tired to talk about this Trump-man...new terrible stories out every day! Not much happening in terms of micro-news, unfortunately...

Chinese trade figures have been excellent - exports strong, imports as well - steel exports down, indicating strong domestic demand. Iron is making new, recent highs today at around 86 US$/t - incredible - and steel rebar has been strong as well. The very high iron ore price for some time now cannot just be explained by Chinese speculators buying it...I guess the recent explanation, that electric arc furnaces are closing down because of high emissions ( they are  using steel scrap, not iron ore ) and hence, more iron ore being  neededfor the same total amount of steel production, would make sense to me. In any case, it´s amazing to see iron ore trading so high for so long and making idiots of ALL analysts! I fear, that Australian mining companies have to get used to an Australian $ between 75-and 80 ct to the US$!

Ecuador is still THE country for copper-and gold exploration in the moment....Solgold continues to march ahead in London, and Lumina Gold Corp in Canada has also been an impressive performer!

Freeport has received a special mining license for Grasberg, leading to some profit-taking during the day in copper. But it´s still up by 1%, as I am writing, alongside an even stronegr performance by all base metals today. They are also profiting from the Chinese numbers, and a phone call between Xi and Trump, which seems to have been pretty cordial.

Gold is holding it´s ground, following the relatively sharp sell-off late yesterday. ETF-inflows in Germany as well as in the States are continuing - I think this little dive might have been a short one.

Evolution yesterday got approval for an extension of the Cowal Mine, which is it´s most important one, to mine it until 2032. Good news, although this has been expected.

New South Wales as well as South Australia re experiencing a massive heatwave in the moment, leading to potential blackouts over the weekend. Malcom Turnbull, the Australian PM, has again called for more gas- and hydro-pump energy generation. My little baby Genex Power are only expecting a government grant for their large project by year end...I would not be surprised, if this would happen materially earlier than this. The stock is depressed because of this terrible, second placement /1:14 rights issue - but nothing is fundamentally wrong here. This stock is dirt cheap....and as you know, technological risk is just about zero. To my knowledge, GNX´s project is the only one currently on the drawing board!

Have a nice weekend!
