Market Update

General - Peak Resources - Graphex Mining

Good afternoon

a strong US$ could not put an end to the rally of gold-and base metals today...nickel trading above 9.000$ again....perhaps the market remembers, that lithium-ion batteries also need nickel and cobalt? Not sure - I fear more important is, that commodity related funds are seeing inflow again. But this comment is already history, as I am finishing this letter - the US-market has turned base metals in the red again! Jobless claims fell unexpectedly, and the US$ is gaining further strength this afternoon.

Australian gold stocks are still very strong indeed - notwithstanding the fact, that the A$ gold price is not moving, due to the strong A$. I think most of our strength in the larger names is due to the North American ETF´s having to buy to accomodate their inflows. Fundamentally, I hate to admit, our large producers are all fully valued at the current gold price.

This might be the reason, that even institutional investors are chasing second liners.

Lithium- and graphite stocks are still moving like hell...some of these things are now trading at large market caps of up to 1.3 bill$ - so the next thing for them will be index inclusion. There has already been considerable interest from insto´s in tehse things, and large brokers like Deutsche Bank and Macquarie Bank have published extensive research papers - but index inclusion will drive the rest into these stocks as well.

I have recently taken a small position in a company, which is going to float next Tuesday, called Graphex. I have to admit, that I totally negelcted this part of the market until recently - and I believe, that Graphex is a very lucky situation for late-comers. More further below....

The other story, which late-comers should be playing in my opinion, is the Rare Earth story. Tesla´s cars are using induction engines - they do not need any Rare Earth. But just about any other electrical car manufacturer does need them, as well as wind energy....Chinese exports have risen very strongly this year, and from what I have heard is, that there have been quite reasonable stockpiles of Rare Earth within China. But these are going to vanish soon, and in the not too distant future, Rare Earth prices will move. Any improvement will meet a very small number of stocks, as China is still producing 90% of the world´s material. The prime canadidate to buy is certainly Lynas, which seems to have turned the corner operationally - but they still have net debt of more than 500 Mill A$, and are at the mercy of their ( very friendly ) lenders.

But I have recently spoken quite a bit about Peak Resources, which also presented at our conference in Zurich a few month ago. PEK are in the last days of their small capital raising, which will enable them to finish the bankable feasibility study for their first-class project in Tanzania. As you know, PEK are financed by a large PE-fund, and the World Bank - both will be very valuable, once it comes to projct financing next year - probably some 125 mill US$. I have high regards for the management of PEK, and there is very little doubt as to their project quality - both should reduce execution risk. Go to their webpage www.peakresources.com.au and have a look at their last presentation - in my opinion, very worthwhile. I declare my interest - I took some stock in the recent placement, and bought some more in the market as well at current prices. In my opinion, it will be a question of time, when investors will channel some of their profits in the other new generation minerals/metals stocks a small part of their profits into the sector.

Graphex Mining Ltd - going to list on the 14th of June. I would be surprised, if they trade at 40ct ( which would give them an EV 22 Mill A$ fully diluted ) - against an IPO of 20ct - and I got a small allocation in the stock for my fund. But this IPO was priced in late February, and was cheap then. In the meantime, stocks like Kibaran ( which I quite like as well, but costs are perhaps a bit high ? ), Syrah and Magnis have doubled and trippled since then. All of these companies have their assets close to Graphex - in Southern Tansania, or Northern Mozambique. If you have not invested in this space for far ( as myself! ), I think GPX is a great opportunity. The market cap at the IPO prices is only 11.5 mill$,. of which just under half is cash. Kibaran does have an EV about 53 Mill A$ as at today. The company is probably 9-12 month ahead of Graphex in it´s development - but Graphex also has a pre-feasibility study already completed, for a very similar NPV, mining approval expected this month or next, and enough cash to finish the bankable feasibility study. Also, to me it looks to be the slightly better project overall. The company has also signed a MOU with respected Chinese company, China National Building Material Group, and is in talks with them for off-take and financing. Construction start is expected in 2017. In my opinion, the company should have a similar market cap to Kibaran ( which I also quite like ), which would still leave them at only 20% of the expected NPV of 200 Mill US$ for the project.

Have a nice evening,

General - West African

Good afternoon

Chinese trade figures today got markets pretty excited: Imports rose by 5.2% YoY, vs expectations of 2.5% - indicating more strength of the Chinese economy.

Base metals very strong earlier on - copper is giving back some of the strong gains now. But zinc is making a new high, up by nearly 3%, and nickel is up by 3% as well, hitting a new 1-month high. Gold is profiting from ongoing BREXIT talk, as well as the weak US$. So more fun to come here, hoppefully - US gold mining Indices are up by 5% and trade at new highs.

Nickel is doing well because of the impending strike at Cerro Matoso, as reported, and on the relatively militant wording of Philippines new president, who  specificially mentioned his home state, Mindanao, where more than 40% of the countries nickel ore production is based, as being enviromentally damaging. Last but not least, oil is trading strongly up as well.

West African Resources - announced some drilling results yesterday. The results in itself were nothing spectacular, but the holes had been drilled mainly to check previous RC drilling with the more detailed and secure diamond drilling. Previous results have been confirmed, and the core can be used for density estimates for the updated, bankable feasibility study which has just started. The results were from the M1 North deposit, which is shaping up as being a nice add-on - but the "real" stuff is in the M1 South desposit, were gold grades have been much better. The company has started a large drilling program for both parts of the resource, as well as for step-out drilling, and the next few weeks/month should see very good news flow. The stock has come back a little, following the listing of the last placement a few days ago - that was done at 12.5ct, and it always had to be expected, that some investors would take the short term profit of 30% or so. In my opinion, a good time to accumulate some stock. As with so many gold stocks, the deep value might have gone - but the upside frome xploration, and delivery of the updated, bankable feasibility study should still be significant.

In the emantime, the amazing run of lithium/graphite stocks continues...I am looking at a few of them, mainly Kibaran Resources, and a new IPO called Graphex - but I am still not that sure, that I will find good value in the sector. The other metals, which should be looking good, like Rare Earth, are still not finding any market interest - it might be more worth while to search for value here!

Have a nice evening and enjoy the ride!

General - Oceana

Good afternoon

a weak Yuan, and a massive rise in copper stocks on the LME are driving copper lower today, and drag - to a lesser extent - the other base metals with them.

Yellen´s comments suggest, that interest rate increases should most probably not be expected any time this summer - maybe in September - maybe never???? She is citing the US labor market, risks in the Chinese economy, and a possible BREXIT as risks to the world economy.

Iron ore and Steel Rebar had another strong day in China overnight, while oil looks like closing above 50$ for WTI for the first time since Nov 2015. More production losses in Nigeria are helping - but I believe, that the air is getting thin now....at 50$, some shale producers might start pumping again. For the banks, this should provide them for some breathing space in their energy-lending portfolios.

The relatively strong demand for steel in China, alongside with the PMI bubbling along just above 50, might indicate some ongoing strength of the Chinese economy - at least relative to some pretty bearish expectations.

The Australian$ is very strong today - it jumped following some RBA-comments , indicating some reluctance to cut interest rates any further. While gold is holding quite nicely just above 1240 US$/oz, in A$ terms, we are not looking that flash at 1666 A$/oz. In light of some very strong runs for Australian gold producers, I think one should be a bit cautious at these levels...it never hurts to take a few profits here and there.

Lundin Mining seems to be giving the green light to the development of the large Fruta del Norte gold deposit in Ecuador. This is a big change for Ecuador, which over the last years, has been one of the best hated countries for mine development.

Copper production in Peru, driven by new projects, is growing strongly. Not unexpected, but certainly a negative for copper. Production is set to double from 2011 to next year - catapulting the country to being the second largest copper producer behind Chile only. For zinc, things are looking a lot better - production is down by 9.1% this year so far, which is signifciant, as Peru is also the second largest zinc producer in the world. More bull market amunition for zinc! Demand for small zinc stocks continued unabated last night.

Oceana Gold have released an update on their 30 Mill US$ exploration program. Very good results from their NZ assets Waihi and McCraes, as well as from Haile, with a number of very impressive intersections. Good to see, that their exploration push is paying off - sucecsfull exploration is still the best value add! The only area missing any significant results seems to be the Philippines around Didipio - exploration is at an earlier stage here, but a large  drilling program has now started here as well.

Have a nice eveing

General - zinc stocks - WPG Resources

Good afternoon,

following on from the ultra-strong USD performance, gold mining stocks had the expected, big run today...12-13% up generally!

I guess even more importantly, gold is going higher again this afternoon, following some limted profit-taking this morning...Interesting to note again , what we have seen very often for a long time: gold miners are very sensitive to changes in the US$ price of gold - the A$ gold price is trading at about 1690 A$/oz, which is nice, but still 70$ below it´s recent high. Ongoin BREXIT-discussions are probably helping to keep up the interest for gold.

Base metals continue their improved performance. and Steel Rebar as well as iron ore seem to have bottomed out and are having a strong day ( RIO and BHP up by another 5% in London today )

Zinc stocks are starting to run in most markets - especially the more speculative developers. Heron Resources and Venturex in Australia, as well as Foran Mining in Canada had big days today and Friday - on much better than normal turnover.

The new Philippine Prime Minister in heavy talk on miners...he does not want big mining companies to exploit the nations riches, and is warning the industrie, that mining licences would be revoked, if mines would not be run in an enviromentally responsible manner. Sounds like Philippino companies could be in for a hard time!

WPG Resources - I started looking at this company recently. An interesting one to follow...They bought the Challenegr Mine a few month ago for next to nothing from Kingsgate, and started production again a few days ago. The JV ( 50% to WPG ) should produce 50-55.000oz for the next 2.5 years at AISC of about 1200 A$/oz, perhaps a bit less. Hard to believe, that KCN did let it go....In trucking distance, the company also owns the Tarcoola mine, which should also start producing about 20.000 oz p.a., utilising the Challenger plant. The company has a history as a iron ore developer, and sold their asset for 320 mill$ to Onesteel - returning basically all proceeds after cash to shareholders. Therefore, the management has a very loyal backing in Australia, and I would expect them to make more aquistions. The market cap is more than covered by profits from the two existing mines - so an interesting one to follow. More aqusitions would need more capital, at least, if tehy take place this year - so keep some powder try. But this could develope into a nice bull market play

have a nice evening

General - gold - agriculturals in bull market!

Good afternoon

what a day for the gold bugs! labor market figures were very weak indeed - no way, that the FED is going to do something in June, and probably not in July, either...!

Gold is also getting some help again from fresh inflows into the gold ETF - holdings are now at the highest since Okt 2013!

Currencies are jumping as well - as you would expect, the US$ is weak - the A$ very strong against the US, but slightly weaker against Euro - the A$ gold price is back to 1692 A$/oz - nice enough - and last but not least, base metals are profiting from the US$ as well, with zinc above 2000$/t for the first time since mid 2015, and copper up by 2%.

German 10-year Bund yields are down below 10 BP again....

The US gold indices are very strong, ub by 8-9%  - and BHP is up by more than 3% in the moment in London, despite overall market weakness today.

Interesting enough. agricultural commodity prices are coming into the limelight again, being up by more than 20%, driven mainly by worries about the weather patterns, as Bloomberg says.Sugar, soybeans, wheat - all very strong. I guess the next thing will be crop-protection and fertilizer companies

Nothing much to report today from the micro-level - only leaves me to wish you a nice weekend!
